SEO The Google Factor

What is SEO?

why is seo important 300x278 What is SEO?

SEO or “Search Engine Optimization” is the term used for the necessary steps taken by a webmaster (website owner or manager) to ensure their website ranks in Google (shows up as one of the first few listed sites in a Google search when searched for using a particular word or phrase). *I’m using Google as the Search engine of choice for this post due to it’s popularity.

It’s a never-ending conquest trying to figure out what Google looks for when it’s assessing your website’s relevancy (it’s all about relevancy with Google) and they’re consistantly making changes to their algorithm (what they look for when assessing your site).

How does Google “assess” my site?

Google has software (commonly referred to as robots, bots, spiders or crawlers) that works it’s way through the internet through hyperlinks and collects information form the sites they visit. Google then determines whether the information from each site warrants it including that particular site being indexed for inclusion in search results.

If you want your website to be included and rank highly, you must make it easy for the robots to navigate through your site and you must make it obvious what your site is about.

A few of the onsite (on your website) things to take into consideration when optimizing your website are:

• Including keywords in your headings, page titles, meta descriptions and through your text (without going overboard)
• Including a sitemap file
• Attaching “alt tags” to all images (these tags describe what each image is about)
Limiting the use of Flash (most of the time the robots can’t read what’s in flash)
• Have a headings structure (from most important headings on a page to least)
• Using Google Analytics (this is code Google generates that you place in your website files so that you can use Google Analytics on your site.
• Having a high ratio of on page text compared to page code (this tells Google that your site is informative.

A couple of the offsite (off your website) things to take into consideration when optimizing your website are:

• Backlinks (these are links from other websites to your site. The more links from reputable, relevant websites to yours, the better).
• Social intraction (Google have been suggesting that activity from Social Media relating to your site is included in their algorithm).

SEO goes a lot deeper than what’s mentioned above but it’s a kick in the right direction for those who haven’t considered optimizing their website for the search engines.
